Gaston County Schools has appointed Dr. Morgen A. Houchard, Ed.D., as the new superintendent, effective February 19, 2024.

What they’re saying: Board chairman Jeffrey K. Ramsey expressed confidence in Dr. Houchard's ability to lead the district, citing his diverse background in education. Houchard, who has worked in various roles, including classroom teacher, school administrator, and central office administrator, will succeed Stephen C. Laws, Ed.D., as the eighth superintendent since the district's formation in 1968.

“I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation to the Board of Education for giving me this opportunity and believing in my ability to serve as the superintendent for Gaston County Schools. I look forward to working with the Board, and I am committed to doing everything I can to make our school system even stronger because I believe that strong schools have a direct connection to the strength of our community.” Houchard shared.

The bottom line: The Board anticipates a smooth transition as Dr. Houchard works with Dr. Laws in the coming weeks. Ramsey pledged the Board's support for Houchard as he assumes the role of superintendent.
